Introduction of the controller Project
To control home appliance remotely there are various technologies and equipment are available in market around us and some of those are even in function in some houses. This project is also related to this subject, but this project will have some unique features which would not be available in commercially sold gadgets. The most common basis of mostly available systems is that these workable only for short ranges and therefore have limited functionality. This limitation can be improved with use of some equipment which have larger range of application or which could be operated from a remote distance or using a device one become able to control something from a far distance from the machine under observation or control. One of the many options is one that involve use of the wireless communication technique like the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications). In this microcontroller 8052 project, we are going to use the GSM modem for sending and receiving text messages. The project is designed for seven home appliances initially which could be increase on any later stage to meet the requirement of a larger set of devices to be controlled. The 8052 Microcontroller is the heart of this project. The GSM modem will be interfaced to microcontroller 8052. The GSM modem will receive and transmit the messages for the sake of control of various device under commands of the microcontroller. The GSM network operators all over the world have roaming facilities, by this the user can often continue to use their mobile phones when they travel to other countries with same number. Therefore the user from any where in world can have direct access to his control system to control the appliance accordingly.
The microcontroller verifies for authentication of the
number and, if the number is authorized, particular home appliance will be
taken place or to be controlled like switched ON or switched OFF. An EEPROM is also
interfaced to this controller system to store the home appliance position at
every instant. This home appliance position information will not be deleted
even in power failure conditions. Electronics components used in this project
are very briefly listed below:
- The microcontroller 8052
- The GSM modem with associated components on circuit board.
- RS-232 serial communication device for voltage levels converter
- A keypad matrix for input to system;
- A 16 characters and 2lines, LCD is used to display various messages of the system.
- The TRAICs are used controller the various loads just like electronics switch or relays
- The opto-coupler MOC3021 are used to drive the TRIACs for controlling various appliance.
- The regulated power supply of 5v DC having current capacity about 1000mA will be used.
- The voltage regulator IC 7805 which is a three terminal device will be ued to give regulated power supply to system.
- The Bridge rectifier for full wave rectification of DC from AC will be used with a step down transformer 230V AC to 12v AV.
OBJECTIVE
The main
objective of the project is controlling the home appliances by using wireless
communication system i.e., Global system for mobile communications modem (GSM).

ADVANTAGES
- System can be monitored and controlled from anywhere.
- If required the Mobile number is changeable at system.
- Home appliance status will not be lost in power failure condition.
APPLICATIONS OF GSM BASED SYSTEM
This system is developed for mobile reporting application
only however It could be interfaced to personal computer system for advance
application like utilization of data bases and complex functions through other
applications, but it is limited to mobile use.

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
The embedded systems are sum of software part and the hardware part of a project or system to perform a predefine special tasks. The central basic device of the embedded system is processor of course it could be a Microprocessors and a Microcontrollers. These appliances which have embedded control have a processor based hardware to meet the specific requirement of the application along with the its software which is executed by the processor. The embedded software is also called “firm ware”. The desktop PC and laptop are the general purpose computer not a perfect example of embedded system. The PCs are often used for a variety of applications such as playing games, word processing, accounting, software development and so on. Embedded systems are constrained for power. As many embedded systems operate through a battery, the power consumption has to be very low for embedded systems.
APPLICATION AREAS OF THE EMBEDDED SYSTEM
Almost every
machine which have some automatic featured and and have electronics control in
side it, then it will be using the embedded systems. The embedded system
is in every daily like field like consumer electronics, office
automation, industrial automation, biomedical engineering, wireless
communication, data communication, telecommunications, transportation, military
and so on.
CONSUMER APPLIANCES
At home we use a
number of embedded systems which include digital camera, digital diary, DVD
player, electronic toys, microwave oven etc. The embedded systems is also used
in automobile industry for transmission control, engine spark control,
air-conditioning, navigation etc. Even wristwatches are now becoming embedded systems. Several robots
and toys are embedded systems.
OFFICE AUTOMATION
The various
appliance used in normal day to day office work have built in automation techniques
and are using embedded systems in it like copying machine, fax machine, key telephone,
modem, printer, scanner etc.
INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION
A lot of
industries use embedded systems. These include pharmaceutical, sugar, nuclear
energy, electricity generation etc. The embedded systems for industrial use are
designed to carry out tasks like monitoring the temperature, humidity, voltage
etc.
MEDICAL ELECTRONICS
All the patient
monitoring equipment in medical industry in the hospital has an embedded system
with them. These equipment include diagnostic instrument or device such as ECG,
EEG, blood pressure measuring devices.
COMPUTER NETWORKING
Computer
networking products such as routers, Integrated Services Digital Networks
(ISDN), and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) are data communication protocols.
A router interconnects 2 networks may be running different protocol stacks and
function is to obtain the data packets, analyze the packets and send them
towards the destination.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
In the telecommunications sector the embedded systems have very dense use in subscriber terminals and network equipment such as key telephones, ISDN phones, terminal adapters, web cameras etc. The network equipment includes multiplexers, Packet Assemblers Dissemblers (PADs), sate11ite modems etc. IP phone, IP gatekeeper etc. are the latest embedded systems.
